The Eternal Timeless ’64 J-Style Bass Pickup Set faithfully recreates the distinctive sound of mid-1960s offset bass pickups - delivering deep, warm lows, articulate mids and crisp, airy highs that defined an era of electric bass tone.
With vintage-correct output of approximately 8.6kΩ in the bridge position and 8.2kΩ in the neck, these pickups capture the dynamic response, clarity and punch that made early Jazz Bass® instruments so versatile.
Whether you’re laying down smooth soul grooves, walking jazz lines or digging into funk and rock, the Timeless ’64 set responds with exceptional touch sensitivity and note definition, allowing your basslines to sit perfectly in the mix.
Inspired by the Golden Era of Offset Bass Tone
Designed to capture the feel and response of great mid-1960s bass pickups, the Timeless ’64 set is scatter-wound by hand using 42 AWG Plain Enamel wire, one of the defining materials used in early Fender bass pickups.
This construction produces:
• deep, supportive low end
• open, articulate mids
• clear, shimmering highs
The result is a balanced, responsive pickup set that delivers the unmistakable clarity and musicality associated with classic Jazz Bass recordings.
Hand-selected Alnico 5 rod magnets with flush, unbevelled tops ensure strong note definition and accurate string balance, giving the bridge pickup focused bite while the neck pickup remains warm and rounded.
Vintage-Correct Offset Design
Like original early-1960s examples, the Timeless ’64 set follows the true vintage Jazz Bass pickup layout, using two different pickup lengths.
The neck pickup is physically shorter, while the bridge pickup is longer. This design compensates for the reduced string movement closer to the bridge, allowing the bridge pickup to produce slightly higher output and maintain balanced volume across positions.
This difference in pickup length is the real reason the Jazz Bass bridge pickup appears “offset” toward the bridge. Many modern basses use two pickups of identical size, but the original design relied on two different coil lengths to achieve proper tonal balance and output.
In the Timeless ’64 set, the bridge pickup is wound slightly hotter than the neck - just as on vintage instruments - ensuring balanced response when switching between positions.
When both pickups are blended together, their interaction produces the famous natural mid-scoop associated with the classic Jazz Bass tone, delivering tight lows, airy highs and a slightly hollow midrange that sits beautifully in a mix.
Polarity Options
The Timeless J-Style pickups are supplied in vintage orientation as standard, meaning both pickups share the same magnetic polarity and winding direction - just like original instruments of the era. This preserves the lively, open response and subtle harmonic texture that define classic single-coil bass tone.
For players who prefer reduced noise on modern stages, the set can also be supplied in reverse-wound / reverse-polarity (RWRP) configuration. In this setup, each pickup still functions as a true single coil, but when both pickups are used together electrical hum is cancelled.
Choose the configuration that best suits your playing environment:
• Vintage Spec — historically accurate single-coil behaviour
• RWRP Pairing — hum-cancelling when both pickups are used together
