Vintage-hot single-coil pickups for Jazz Bass®-style basses

Powerful ’80s Bass Voice

Quantity

The Eternal "Timeless ’84" J-Style Bass Pickup Set delivers the bold, muscular tone associated with hotter offset bass pickups of the late 1970s and early 1980s - producing deeper lows, thicker mids and a more aggressive voice than earlier vintage designs.

Where the Timeless ’64 captures the open clarity of the pre-CBS era and the Timeless ’74 adds vintage-hot punch, the ’84 set pushes things further, offering higher output, greater compression and a darker, heavier tonal character.

Whether you're driving a rock band, pushing an amp into growling overdrive, or laying down powerful modern grooves, the Timeless ’84 pickups deliver commanding presence and authority.

Inspired by the Evolving Bass Sound of the 1980s

By the early 1980s, many bass players were demanding more output, thicker lows and stronger midrange presence to compete with louder bands and more powerful amplification.

The Timeless ’84 set reflects this shift using scatter-wound 43 AWG polysol wire, producing:

• deeper, heavier low end
• thicker low-mid presence
• smoother, slightly darker highs

This hotter winding lowers the resonant peak slightly, giving the pickups a fuller, more powerful tonal footprint while still preserving the articulation and responsiveness of a traditional single-coil design.

Hand-selected Alnico 5 rod magnets with flush, unbevelled tops ensure strong string definition and balanced response across the entire register.

How the ’84 Differs from the ’74

While the Timeless ’74 set captures the vintage-hot character of mid-’70s instruments, the Timeless ’84 pushes output further.

The result is:

• thicker overall response
• stronger low mids
• slightly smoother top end
• increased natural compression

This produces a bigger, heavier voice that works exceptionally well in louder bands and modern performance environments.

Despite the higher output, the pickups retain the clarity and articulation that define the classic offset bass sound.

Vintage Offset Layout

Like traditional offset bass designs, the Timeless ’84 set follows the classic pickup spacing and output balance, with the bridge pickup wound slightly hotter than the neck.

Because string movement is naturally reduced closer to the bridge, the hotter bridge pickup maintains balanced volume between positions while delivering the focused attack players expect from the bridge position.

When both pickups are blended together, their interaction produces the famous natural mid-scoop associated with classic Jazz Bass tone — tight lows, clear highs and a balanced response that sits beautifully in a mix.

Vintage Polarity

The Timeless ’84 pickups are supplied in vintage orientation, meaning both pickups share the same magnetic polarity and winding direction, just like traditional instruments.

Each pickup therefore behaves as a true single coil, preserving the lively, open character and subtle harmonic texture associated with classic bass pickups.

Polarity Options

The Timeless J-Style pickups are supplied in vintage orientation as standard, meaning both pickups share the same magnetic polarity and winding direction — just like original instruments of the era. This preserves the lively, open response and subtle harmonic texture that define classic single-coil bass tone.

For players who prefer reduced noise on modern stages, the set can also be supplied in reverse-wound / reverse-polarity (RWRP) configuration. In this setup, each pickup still functions as a true single coil, but when both pickups are used together electrical hum is cancelled.

Choose the configuration that best suits your playing environment:

• Vintage Spec — historically accurate single-coil behaviour
• RWRP Pairing — hum-cancelling when both pickups are used together
