"The Black Guitar" Tribute S-Type

"The Black Guitar" Tribute S-Type

£3,300.00Price

I built this tribute to Dave Gilmour’s famous Black guitar a few years ago, for a good customer who wanted a version that looked and sounded just like the original but without the wear and ageing of the original - hopefully, I’ll get to make a fully aged version one day soon.

We used alder for the body and rock-solid maple for the neck to best recreate the tone of the original but with upgraded hardware including locking Kluson tuners and a Callaham bridge (with the shortened Gilmour arm). The body was painted straight black with a simple, lightly tinted lacquer for the neck.

There are a few options for pickguards and the subtle extra switch (I’ve tried many over the years) but the most authentic and neat to use are from  Overdrive Custom Guitar Works. These guys make a beautiful recreation of the single-layer acrylic plate that is perfect for this type of build. It also comes with the mini-switch and mounting bracket that although simple enough to fabricate (as I have done in the past) the plate itself is exceptional and well worth the cost and shipping from the States.

I wound a bespoke set of pickups that offer both the warm and subtly in the neck and middle positions with some added beefiness at the bridge - just like the original guitar.
